On Sunday, June 8, 2025, a 43-year-old barber named James Opoku, also called Nana Yaw, was found dead inside his “container” barbershop at Time Enterprise, which is situated in New Site, Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality.
His wife, Christina Mensah, got concerned after multiple calls to her husband that morning went unanswered, leading to the fatal discovery.
Christina responded by sending Shadrach, their kid, to the store to pick up pocket money and see how his father was doing.
Shadrach arrived to see the door shut from the inside.
He called his father and knocked repeatedly, but got no answer. Eventually, he was discovered near the door, laying unconscious.
“There were signs of a struggle,” Shadrach told Connect FM in Takoradi. “He appeared to have crawled some distance from his mattress towards the entrance.”
Even if there isn’t yet an official cause for the death, his story has raised questions about its circumstances.
Christina disclosed that in an effort to discourage robbers, her husband had begun spending the night in the store.
“He’s been sleeping here for a while. Thieves have broken into the shop several times, so he decided to stay inside at night,” she explained.
When asked if Opoku had shown signs of illness, she said, “He was healthy and full of life… I don’t know what took his life.”
