ATO FORSON PLEDGES TO DRIVE ECONOMIC GROWTH THROUGH REAL SECTOR DEVELOPMENT

Finance Minister-designate, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has vowed to prioritize the development of Ghana’s real sector as a cornerstone of the country’s economic transformation.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, Dr. Forson emphasized the importance of shifting focus from macroeconomic indicators to the microeconomy and real sector to achieve sustainable growth.

“As Minister, I will dedicate a considerable amount of my attention toward the development of the microeconomy,” he affirmed, outlining key areas such as agriculture and agribusiness, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), power, petroleum and hydrocarbons, infrastructure, and mining and quarrying as his priorities.

On revenue mobilization, Dr. Forson highlighted Ghana’s untapped potential and pledged to implement stronger compliance measures within the tax administration system to enhance revenue collection.

“We will promote transparency and accountability to build public trust and encourage compliance,” he noted, adding that the government would actively engage businesses, civil society, and development partners to develop inclusive revenue strategies.

He also stressed the need to tap into non-tax revenue sources, which he described as having immense but underutilized potential.

Addressing public expenditure, Dr. Forson called for a paradigm shift in the management of Ghana’s public finances. He proposed reforms to decentralize budget implementation, making sector ministers fully accountable for their budget allocations.

“The quality of expenditure matters,” Dr. Forson said, promising to prioritize public spending that promotes inclusive growth and job creation amid Ghana’s current economic challenges.

Dr. Forson’s vision reflects a commitment to building a resilient economy driven by real sector development, improved revenue mobilization, and prudent public expenditure management.
