Hon. Eugene Boakye Antwi, Member of Parliament for Subin, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 General Elections to poor decisions made by the party’s leadership and a lack of responsiveness to its voters’ concerns.
In a statement shared on social media, the MP highlighted the party’s failure to remove Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta in 2022, despite calls from 90 courageous MPs, as a key factor that alienated the party’s supporters.
“We lost this General Election in the last quarter of 2022…the 90 MPs who mustered courage and called on the President to relieve the Finance Minister of his position due to his mismanagement of our economy,” Hon. Antwi stated. He argued that retaining Ofori-Atta until February 2024 signaled that the party was not listening to the electorate, a mistake that led to severe punishment at the polls.
Hon. Antwi further revealed that voter apathy also played a significant role in the election outcome. He noted that nearly one-third of registered voters, approximately six million individuals, abstained from voting.
“Almost a third of registered voters did not visit their polling stations to vote due to apathy,” he explained.
The Subin MP called the loss a “bitter lesson” for the NPP, urging the party to reflect on its defeat and realign with its base’s concerns to avoid a repeat of such a significant defeat in the future.
The 2024 elections have been one of the most closely watched contests, with voter turnout and economic management emerging as central themes. The NPP’s loss highlights the growing demand for accountability and responsiveness from Ghanaian voters.
