FEAR OF MATHEMATICS PUSHED ME TO LEAVE PHARMACY FOR THEATRE – Actor, Andrew Tandoh-Adote

Renowned Ghanaian stage actor and voiceover artiste, Andrew Tandoh-Adote has discussed how his challenges with math played a role in shaping his career trajectory.

During a chat with Abrantepa on GhanaWeb TV’s ‘Talkertainment’, Tandoh-Adote revealed that his father, who was an engineer passionate about mathematics, had desired him to choose a profession in pharmacy.

“He believed in the sciences, and he was one of those parents who believed that you need to do science, something in science, mathematics,” he said.

Tandoh-Adote struggled with mathematics and formed a pessimistic view of the subject because of his school experiences with how it was taught and perceived.

He described how the fear and difficulty of math prevented lots of students from his generation from feeling confident in their abilities to succeed in the subject.

He said that if the educational environment had been more supportive and encouraging, his view of mathematics might have been different.

“I think for at least my generation, there was a bit of negativity surrounding mathematics, and it was made to look like this thing that was so scary, so complicated, and so highbrow that if you are dumb, you won’t be able to get it.

“So for a lot of us, we developed a negative attitude towards mathematics because of that, unless you are naturally inclined to numbers and things like that, more creative, visual, and all those things.

“But I think if I had been in an environment where those who taught math were more friendly and more encouraging, I think it would have been better,” he said.

Even though his father wanted him to pursue a different path, Tandoh-Adote decided to pursue his passion for the performing arts, convinced that he could have a stronger influence as a performer.
