FIRE GUTS CHINA CITY MALL IN KUMASI, DESTROYS GOODS AND BUILDING

A massive inferno has completely destroyed the newly opened China City Mall at Santasi, consuming the entire structure and merchandise worth thousands of cedis in one of Kumasi's most significant commercial fires this year.

A devastating fire has completely destroyed the newly opened China City Mall in Santasi, Kumasi, reducing the commercial facility to ruins and consuming goods worth thousands of cedis in a blaze that sent thick smoke billowing across the city on Thursday, October 30.

The inferno, which reportedly started from the rear section of the building, spread rapidly throughout the mall despite the immediate response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS). “We received a distress call about the fire and dispatched two fire tenders to the scene immediately. Our men have been working tirelessly to contain the blaze,” a GNFS officer confirmed at the scene.

Despite firefighters’ efforts, the entire building—which housed various shops selling home accessories, electronics, and groceries was consumed by the flames. The mall, which had opened earlier in 2025, had quickly become a popular shopping destination for residents of Kumasi and surrounding communities.

According to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), no casualties have been reported. However, eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene as the fire spread too quickly for most traders to salvage their merchandise. “It was frightening. Within minutes, the whole place was burning,” one shop attendant recounted.

The GNFS has launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage. This incident adds to growing concerns about fire safety compliance and emergency preparedness in commercial facilities across Ghana, following several similar incidents in major cities in recent months.
