Rumors are swirling that Kwame Asare Obeng, widely known as Kwame A Plus, could be tapped for a significant leadership role in Ghana’s 9th Parliament. Sources close to MyNewsGH.com have revealed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is reportedly considering the outspoken Member of Parliament-elect for Gomoa Central for the position of 2nd Deputy Speaker.
Known for his sharp critiques of the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government and his vibrant role as a pundit on UTV’s United Showbiz program, A Plus has become a polarizing yet influential figure in Ghanaian politics and entertainment.
Speaking to MyNewsGH.com, A Plus expressed his gratitude for the speculation surrounding his potential appointment, despite not receiving official communication from the NDC.
“Just the consideration, or even the rumor, is a great honor, considering where I’ve come from,” A Plus said when asked about the possibility.
A Plus, who ran as an independent candidate, made headlines after securing a decisive victory in the December 7 parliamentary elections. He garnered an impressive 14,277 votes out of 36,026 total valid votes cast, defeating incumbent MP Naana Eyiah Quansah of the NPP, who received 11,637 votes. Ywason Mohamed of the NDC trailed with 10,112 votes.
The potential appointment of A Plus as 2nd Deputy Speaker would mark a significant milestone in his journey from an outspoken political commentator to a key figure in Ghana’s legislature. While the rumor remains unconfirmed, it has already sparked widespread discussion about his suitability for the role and the implications for Ghana’s 9th Parliament.
