MAHAMA PLOTTING TO MANIPULATE LAW FOR THIRD TERM BID IN 2028 – NPP Alleges

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused President John Dramani Mahama of orchestrating a scheme to manipulate Ghana’s judicial system in a bid to secure an unconstitutional third term in office.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, the NPP alleged that the recent suspension of the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkornoo, forms part of a broader plot by the Mahama administration to consolidate political power. The move, they claim, is designed to pave the way for the appointment of a loyalist who would preside over key judicial decisions favouring the President.

The NPP, alongside four other political parties—the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), the National Democratic Party (NDP), the People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) announced a joint nationwide protest slated for May 5, 2025, to resist what they described as a “dangerous threat” to Ghana’s democracy.

In a joint statement, the parties alleged that there are ongoing efforts to also remove the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, and her two deputies, in what they described as an attempt to fully control the country’s electoral processes.

“With a handpicked Chief Justice potentially presiding over judicial decisions, this move would pave the way for full political control over Ghana’s democratic institutions,” the statement read.

They further claimed that President Mahama is planning to push for a constitutional interpretation at the Supreme Court—once reconstituted with loyal appointees to overturn the conventional understanding of Article 66(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which bars a President from seeking more than two terms.

“The ultimate goal is to legitimise John Mahama’s bid for a third term in the 2028 general elections,” the parties alleged.

The NPP and its allied parties have called on civil society organisations, religious bodies, traditional leaders, and all well-meaning Ghanaians to join the May 5 protest to safeguard the country’s constitutional order.
