2023 AFRICAN GAMES: NO GHANAIAN ATHLETE QUALIFIED FOR PARIS OLYMPIC GAMES – Report

Athletes from Ghana have not qualified for the Olympic Games, which will take place in Paris later this year, 3news reports.

The bad news is that none of the times, heights, or distances covered in Accra 2023 fulfil the necessary standards to compete in track and field at the Olympic Games, despite Team Ghana appearing to have a successful African Games.

Joseph Paul Amoah of Ghana took first place in the men’s 200-meter race at the Games, clocking in at 20.70, only a few milliseconds short of the official qualification mark for the Olympics. The estimated qualifying time is 20.16.

Paul Amoah’s 200-meter personal best is 20.08. He will need to go back and review that form in order to qualify for the Olympics.

Ghana won two gold medals in the high jump in both the men’s and women’s categories. Rose Amoanima Yeboah, who also won gold in 2019, cleared a height of 1.90 meters to win gold in Accra, while Cadman Yamoah cleared a height of 2.23 meters.

The men’s high jump Olympic qualifying height is 2.33 meters, while the women must clear 1.97 meters to get on the aircraft to the French capital.

Azamati, the fastest person in Ghana, will also need to work hard between now and June in an effort to get into the Olympics. His timing of 10.45 seconds, which placed him fifth in the 100-meter final, is among his lowest since he began competing professionally.

Olympic qualifying time for 100m is at an incredible 10.00. To put this time into perspective, only five Ghanaians have ran that time or better in the history of sport in this country – Azamati himself whose national record stands at 9.90, Joseph Paul Amoah who ran 9.94 after the pandemic, 9.98s for Leo Myles Mills who held the national record for close to 2 decades, Aziz Zakari at 9.99s and Eric Nkansah whose record is at 10.00.

With the start of the outdoor season, Azamati will need to work even harder to make it to the Olympic qualification period.

Although the female sprinters from Ghana were brilliant, they will all need to qualify for the world sporting showcase with a time of 11.07 seconds or less.

William Amponsah has some distance to go before he can qualify for both the half marathon and the 10,000m in long-distance running, despite the fact that he took home silver in the latter event and won hearts in the former.

In the hopes that more Ghanaian athletes will put themselves in the running for a spot at the Games, the outdoor season has just begun and competitors have until June 30th to make the Olympic times.
