After Senegal’s triumph against Egypt in the African Cup of Nations final, President Macky Sall proclaimed Monday a national holiday to honor the nation’s first-ever championship in football.
Senegal defeated Egypt’s Mohamed Salah 4-2 on penalties in Sunday’s final in Cameroon, led by Liverpool star Sadio Mane. Extensive overtime had failed to produce a goal.
Senegal finally won the Cup of Nations after two heartbreaking losses in the finals (2002 and 2019).
RTS television reports that Sall will adorn the Lions at the presidential palace in Dakar on Tuesday.
A public holiday has been announced in honor of the Lions’ “great triumph,” according to RTS, citing a presidential order.
