The Paramount Chief of Akyem Abuakwa, Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, claims that Ghana and Akufo Addo would feel ashamed if the National Cathedral is not built.
Despite being the president’s “personal commitment” to God for his political victory, the facility’s use of state funds has sparked public debate.
The Okyenhene, a relative of the president, has urged Ghanaians to finish the task.
On Friday, December 9, Ofori Panin emphasized the project’s many benefits to the National Cathedral Project Board of Trustees in Kyebi.
“He [Akufo-Addo] has to glorify the name of the Lord for how far He has brought him and build the cathedral to testify that he is grateful to God for making him President, there is no sweeter news as this.”
He continued: “with the cathedral, there’ll be no need to travel to Israel, just in Accra, the cathedral will answer all your questions about Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth and everything.
“So I’m pleading with you all, let us not bring shame upon our country and the President, let us contribute to build the cathedral,” he added.
The project has been on hold due to a lack of funding since early this year, so the Board of Trustees visited the Okyeman Council of State to ask for their cooperation.
The minority in Parliament is asking for reports on how much the state is spending on both the cathedral and Akufo-trips Addo’s on opulent jets, which have both been hot topics in recent months.
