The New Media Association of Ghana has thrown their support behind the Ghana Journalist Association’s call for a media blackout on politician, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson.
The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour has asked all Ghanaian media houses and journalists to completely sideline Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Minister of Fisheries and Member of the Awutu Senya East constituency in the Central Region.
This directive comes in the aftermath of the police’s failure to apprehend individuals who physically attacked David Kobenna, a journalist who works with Cape FM in the Central Region, during the NPP’s parliamentary aspirant vetting in Cape Coast.
According to reports, the thugs mistook him for another person they alleged had insulted the MP, also the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development.
In a press release signed by the interim president of the New Media Association of Ghana, Eugene Osafo-Nkansah, he condemned the assault on David Kobenna reckoning that it is not just an attack on one journalist, but an assault on the principles of press freedom and the safety of media practitioner in Ghana.
According to him, the New Media association stands in solidarity and in support of the GJA’s call to action for a media blackout on Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson, adding that they are determined to fight for the rights and protection of journalists and media creatives in Ghana.
Mr Osafo-Nkansah expressed disappointment in the New Patriotic Party and the Ghana Police Service for their ‘regrettable’ lack of response in this matter.
He reiterated that in a democratic society, the freedom of the press is sacrosanct, and any form of violence against a journalist is an affront to the democratic values we hold dear, and he further urged all media houses to throw their weight behind the call for justice by GJA to ensure that such attacks are not only condemned but met with decisive actions by relevant authorities.
