SELF-TAUGHT ENGINEERS ARE RUINING THE INDUSTRY – Appietus

Renowned sound engineer and music producer Appietus has mentioned his worries regarding the increasing number of self-taught sound engineers in Ghana.

In his opinion, people who acquire their skills through YouTube and other internet sources are putting the quality of music production in the nation at risk.

According to graphic.com.gh, Appietus, also known as Appiah Dankwah, highlighted that the Ghanaian music industry is in a major crisis because of the poor quality work of these self-taught sound engineers.

He pointed out that the substandard sound production is holding back Ghana’s music from achieving global acknowledgment, and advised sound producers to undergo professional training to enhance their abilities and make a valuable impact on the industry.

“You have to understand sound engineering, the frequency range listeners can hear, the decibel range you can go, the dynamics, and all the technicalities. You need to understand all these things. It’s only in our industry that you find people saying, ‘Oh, I learned sound engineering on YouTube,’” Appietus argued.

He stressed the importance of formal education and training for sound engineers, comparing it to the impossibility of becoming a doctor through YouTube tutorials.

“For you to become a medical doctor or a surgeon, you cannot go and learn it on YouTube. Nobody is going to lie down and say, okay, this is my stomach, operate on me because you learned it on a social platform. But in Ghana, we have people saying, ‘Oh, I learned it on YouTube, so I know.’ Come on, please. These internet communities cannot teach you the real thing,” he disclosed.

He cautioned that the international economy requires top-notch manufacturing, and anything subpar will not be accepted.

“Works from these amateurs are a contributory factor to why most of our songs are not breaking the global market. The international marketplace knows good quality, so if it’s low, they will not accept it. There’s something called industry standard in sound; if you do not have it, come on, they will just throw your music away.”

Appietus urged self-taught sound engineers to improve their skills and aim for excellence in order to contribute to the success of Ghana’s music industry on an international level.
