Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, a presidential candidate and Vice President, has promised to increase the availability of smartphones for Ghanaians if he becomes president.
During a campaign event, Dr. Bawumia discussed a strategy to work with phone companies in order to offer smartphones through a credit system, allowing people to pay as little as one or two cedis monthly.
“We will make mobile phones accesible, my government will partner with phone manufacturers so that Ghanaians can afford them on credit and pay 1 or 2 cedis every month”. Bawumia announced, highlighting the importance of digital inclusion in his administration’s agenda.
He emphasised that this initiative would significantly enhance access to information and communication technology, bridging the digital divide and empowering more Ghanaians to participate in the digital economy.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve the technological landscape and foster economic growth.
Dr Bawumia stressed that access to smartphones is essential for modern living, providing opportunities for education, business, and social connection.
He noted that many Ghanaians currently lack access to smartphones due to high costs, a barrier his government aims to eliminate through this innovative scheme.
“Access to smartphones is no longer a luxury but a necessity. It opens up opportunities for education, business, and staying connected with loved ones. By making smartphones affordable, we are not only enhancing connectivity but also fostering an environment where every Ghanaian can thrive in the digital age,” Dr Bawumia added.
He went on to elaborate that the strategy would include collaborating with leading phone companies to guarantee that the devices are accessible with affordable prices and favorable payment options.
The initiative would also involve educating users on how to use smartphones effectively for personal and professional growth.
