SACHET WATER SELLERS STAGE MINI-PROTEST IN ACCRA AGAINST ILLEGAL MINING BY SELLING PACKAGED GALAMSEY WATER

A group of sachet water sellers in Accra has taken to the streets to voice their concerns about the growing issue of illegal mining, also known as “galamsey,” which continues to plague various parts of Ghana.

The sellers, primarily made up of women, held a mini-protest along a busy highway in the capital, urging authorities to take decisive action against the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining activities.

The protesters were seen carrying yellow-coloured sachets of water, a striking visual symbol of their grievances.

The choice of color is believed to represent the pollution of water bodies affected by illegal mining.

The yellow sachets signified the transformation of once-clean drinking water into contaminated and unsafe sources, mirroring the dire state of many rivers and streams in mining areas.

The protest drew attention from passersby, with many motorists slowing down to observe the demonstration.

The sachet water sellers are among the many Ghanaians affected by the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, which has led to widespread deforestation, pollution of water bodies, and destruction of farmland.
