Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo has publicly criticized the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) organizers for allegedly providing a fake flight itinerary to Ghanaian filmmakers invited to the prestigious event in Nigeria. Sarfo, alongside other notable industry figures such as Pascal Amanfo and Akorfa Adjeani, found themselves stranded and embarrassed at the airport on Friday, November 1, after discovering their names were not listed on the airline’s system.
In an Instagram post, Sarfo revealed that AMAA had assured the Ghanaian delegation of an all-expenses-paid trip, complete with travel arrangements and an itinerary. However, when they arrived at the airport, they were informed that their flights were unconfirmed and were told to purchase their tickets if they wished to proceed, despite having received a flight itinerary just the day before.
“We kept asking about our travel itinerary, and they kept giving us excuses. Eventually, we received the itinerary on Thursday night, so we thought we were all set to go,” she said. “But at the airport, after presenting our passports, we were suddenly asked to wait. Hours went by with no communication, and eventually, we were told we had to pay for our tickets if we wanted to board.”
Sarfo expressed her frustration, noting that she had rearranged her schedule and sacrificed multiple commitments, including a feature film project and other engagements, to attend the event. “If you invite me with an all-expenses-paid promise, send me an itinerary, and then leave me stranded, who does that? It was humiliating,” she lamented.
The actress also pointed out the double standard, noting that when Nigerian invitees attend Ghanaian events, their comfort is prioritized with transportation, lodging, and sometimes even additional support. She expressed disappointment that AMAA did not extend the same courtesy to their Ghanaian counterparts.
Calling on the Ghanaian film industry to stand up against such treatment, Sarfo demanded an apology from AMAA, arguing that this incident disrespects the value and contributions of Ghanaian filmmakers to African cinema.
