The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama has blamed the death of the Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of the KAMA Group, Dr Michael Agyekum Addo on the government’s haircuts.
While on a recent campaign trail, Mahama conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved family, emphasizing the severe effects of the government’s debt restructuring initiative on people and enterprises.
He asserted that Dr Michael Agyekum Addo and several others have passed away after being greatly impacted by the Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP) launched by the government via the Ministry of Finance.
“Dr. Michael Agyekum Addo’s (KAMA Group CEO) death underscores the silent suffering many are enduring because of the Domestic Debt Exchange Program,” Mahama stated.
He stated that the current government borrowed extensively from foreign nations, resulting in the creation of the Domestic Debt Exchange program.
He disclosed that the NPP took about $11.5 million dollars. “Since 2016, this government has taken loans from other countries amounting to $11.5 billion. It got to a time, they couldn’t pay the loans so what they did was, if you are an ordinary Ghanaian and you purchased bonds or treasury bill with the government, they refuse to pay”, he said during one of his campaign tour.
John Mahama mentioned the late CEO of KAMA Group, who expressed his frustration over the government’s refusal to reimburse him after years of investments.
“He’s not the only one, a lot of pensioners who thought they would have money to depend on when they come on pension are all suffering and are in pain due to the refusal of the government to pay of money they owe them” John Mahama lamented.
John Mahama criticized the NPP for ruining the lives of many when they shut down the banks in 2017, stating that the NPP lacks the decency to request Ghanaians to support them once more after inflicting loss and suffering on the people.
