John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of hastily initiating projects in the Ashanti Region to win favor with voters ahead of the 2024 elections.
During his campaign tour in the region, Mahama criticized the NPP for neglecting the Ashanti Region—regarded as their political stronghold—for much of their tenure, only to rush incomplete projects as elections approach.
“The NPP has been unfair to the people of Ashanti. After eight years in power, they have little to show for it. Now, as the elections draw near, they are frantically directing contractors to create the impression that they’ve been working,” Mahama said.
He described the last-minute efforts as a deceptive “419” scheme, suggesting that these projects are superficial attempts to mislead the electorate. He also asserted that many of these initiatives would remain unfinished unless the NDC returns to power to complete them.
Mahama further claimed that this strategy is not unique to the Ashanti Region but is being employed in other parts of the country as well.
“This pattern of deception is evident nationwide. They’re trying to create a false narrative of progress, but the people of Ghana are discerning and will not be fooled,” he emphasized.
The former president called on voters in the Ashanti Region and beyond to critically assess the government’s track record and reject what he termed “desperate tactics” by the NPP to cling to power.
