Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has extended a lifeline to traders affected by the recent devastating fire at the Kantamanto Market. During a visit to the site, he announced a donation of GH¢200,000 to the market leadership and pledged further support with building materials for reconstruction efforts.
Touring the charred remains of the once-bustling market, Dr. Bawumia engaged with traders who had suffered significant losses due to the inferno, which destroyed goods and stalls. The vice president expressed deep sympathy for the victims, reassuring them of the government’s commitment to aiding their recovery.
“We will investigate the incident to determine the cause of the fire. I’m happy to see that reconstruction work has already started, and with the little support we can provide, we will help ensure the market is restored to a befitting state,” Dr. Bawumia said during his address.
As part of long-term measures to prevent such incidents, Dr. Bawumia proposed enhanced security at the market, including the installation of CCTV cameras and the establishment of an internal security team. He added, “Even though we are exiting office, I will personally ensure that the cameras are brought and installed.”
Dr. Bawumia was accompanied by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Titus Glover, as well as leaders of the Kantamanto Market. Together, they toured the affected areas and offered words of encouragement to traders struggling to rebuild their livelihoods.
