MAHAMA AYARIGA TAKES OVER AS MAJORITY LEADER IN GHANA’S 9TH PARLIAMENT

Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has been appointed the new Majority Leader of Ghana’s 9th Parliament. This development, reported by Accra-based Joy FM on Thursday, January 16, 2025, marks a significant shift in parliamentary leadership.

Ayariga succeeds Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam, who President John Dramani Mahama has nominated as the Minister of Finance-designate.

The appointment aligns with earlier speculations by Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, who, during parliamentary discussions on January 9, 2024, predicted that Ayariga would replace Ato Forson.

In his statement, Afenyo-Markin also anticipated other leadership changes within Parliament. He suggested that the MP for Cape Coast South, Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan, would assume the role of Deputy Majority Leader, succeeding Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, who is expected to be appointed Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.

Additionally, Afenyo-Markin claimed that Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, MP for South Dayi, would become the new Majority Chief Whip, replacing Kwame Governs Agbodza. Agbodza is rumored to be in line for a ministerial role. Ahmed Ibrahim, Deputy Majority Chief Whip, is also speculated to take up the position of Minister of Local Government and Decentralisation.

This reshuffle signals a strategic reorganization of leadership as Ghana’s 9th Parliament gears up for critical governance and legislative activities under President Mahama’s administration.
