Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has established a Special Investigative Team to probe the deaths linked to the 2020 and 2024 general elections, following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama.
The team, composed of highly skilled and experienced officers from the Ghana Police Service, is chaired by Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe. According to the report, the IGP has set clear timelines for the team to complete their investigations and submit their findings.
In a letter addressed to the President, Dr. Dampare assured that all necessary resources would be made available to facilitate the investigation. The IGP emphasized that this initiative builds on prior efforts undertaken by his administration since he assumed office in 2021.
One of the key steps taken by Dr. Dampare was the establishment of the Cold Case Unit at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters. This unit was tasked with resolving longstanding cases, including those related to the 2020 election deaths. The unit has reportedly made significant progress, with some suspects currently facing prosecution.
President Mahama had issued the directive on January 10, 2025, calling for a thorough investigation into the fatalities associated with both elections. The move highlights the government’s commitment to addressing unresolved incidents and ensuring justice for the victims.
