Minister-Designate for Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has voiced deep worries about the worsening condition of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), stating that the Service has not acquired any fire tender in almost ten years.
While addressing the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, January 24, the MP for Asawase emphasized the persistent neglect and lack of resources that have obstructed the Service’s efficiency.
Muntaka highlighted the urgent requirement for funding in firefighting tools, stressing that the absence of new fire engines has left firefighters unprepared for urgent situations.
He pointed out that the lack of dependable tools has not only jeopardized public safety but also exposed firefighters to unwarranted criticism from disgruntled citizens.
“No fire tender has been procured in the last nine or almost ten years,” Muntaka stated.
“Imagine you and I using vehicles that don’t even carry the kind of load the Fire Service vehicles do. After ten years, how effective can they be? You wake up, try to start the vehicle, and it doesn’t respond. That’s the kind of obsolete equipment we are dealing with.” he added.
