Highlife singer Kwabena Kwabena has declared himself the pioneer of Valentine’s Day concerts in Ghana. Speaking on Daybreak Hitz with DJ Slim, the Adult Music hitmaker stated that he initiated the concept of hosting shows on February 14, a tradition he says predates similar events by other Ghanaian artists.
His comments follow Akwaboah’s decision to cancel his 2024 Shades of Love concert, citing scheduling conflicts with Kwabena Kwabena’s event. Akwaboah, who has hosted Valentine’s Day shows for six years, expressed his frustration in a statement issued last year. “For the past 6 years, Valentine’s Day has become synonymous with Shades of Love. This is why it pains me to say we will not be able to have our concert this year,” Akwaboah wrote.
In an interview on Accra FM, Akwaboah suggested that Kwabena Kwabena could have chosen an earlier date, such as February 10, instead of February 14. “If his conscience serves him right for what he is doing, it’s up to him. His decision baffles me a lot,” he remarked.
Kwabena Kwabena, however, refuted Akwaboah’s claims, asserting that he popularized Valentine’s Day shows in Ghana with his F14 concert in 2014. “On February 14, 2014, I did my first Valentine concert called F14. I started Valentine shows in Ghana. So, it shouldn’t be a problem if anyone else wants to host an event on the same day,” he explained.
He further emphasized the importance of recognizing the contributions of artists to the industry. “No artiste should lay claim that it’s their day. That’s not fair,” Kwabena Kwabena noted.
Looking ahead, Kwabena Kwabena is set to host his Valentine’s Day concert at the Grand Arena on February 14, 2025. Tickets are available at GHS 300 for regular, GHS 500 for couples, and VVIP tables are customizable. Reservations can be made by calling 0551103393 or 0505163674, and tickets can also be purchased by dialing 7141010#.
