Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) team, led by Foreign Affairs Minister-nominee Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, of conducting unauthorized drone surveillance over his private properties.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, February 2, Afenyo-Markin claimed that drones had been repeatedly spotted over his assets in Winneba and Abelenkpe, suggesting a covert monitoring operation. The Effutu MP stated that he had been alerted to the surveillance on multiple occasions but chose to remain silent, asserting that all his properties were legally acquired.
The allegations come after Ablakwa, during his vetting on Friday, January 31, disclosed details about Afenyo-Markin’s real estate holdings. The Minority Leader recounted a private discussion with Ablakwa before the vetting, in which he advised him against what he described as overreach. However, he claims the surveillance activities persisted.
“I was aware that these ORAL guys have been flying drones in Winneba over my property. I kept quiet. They went to my beachfront property, mounted a drone, and flew it from the community center. My boy saw it, but I told them to ignore it,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin further alleged that the drone operations extended beyond Winneba to his residence in Abelenkpe. “In Abelenkpe, we see drones flying in the morning. The police have seen it. Sometimes, early in the morning, we see drones behind the rail line, and I know they are spying on my house,” he added, questioning the necessity of such surveillance.
He also dismissed claims that some of his lands in Winneba were state-owned, calling it a deliberate misrepresentation. “The gentleman brought a search report and created the impression that my lands in Winneba are state lands. With the greatest respect, they are not,” he asserted.
The allegations have intensified the already contentious political atmosphere, raising concerns about surveillance ethics and privacy in political rivalries. Ablakwa and his ORAL team have yet to respond to the accusations.
