GHANAIAN FILMMAKER PETER SEDUFIA REVEALS $235,000 INVESTMENT IN HIT MOVIE ‘ALOE VERA’

Celebrated Ghanaian filmmaker Peter Sedufia has revealed that his critically acclaimed movie, Aloe Vera, required an investment of approximately $235,000 (GH₵3,642,500) to bring to life. The film, which boasts a star-studded cast including Nana Ama McBrown, Adjetey Anang, and Naa Ashorkor, has been widely praised as a landmark achievement in African cinema.

Sedufia made the disclosure during an appearance on Channel One TV’s Upside Down show, where he detailed the film’s production journey, including the challenges of securing funding and achieving global distribution.

“I spent about $235,000 producing Aloe Vera. At the time, the dollar was not as high as it is today, but it was still a significant investment,” Sedufia revealed. He explained that the budget was supported by a mix of international and local investors, with key contributions from South Africa, France, and Ghana. This diverse funding pool allowed the production to meet its high standards, which included the construction of an entire village set in Dabala, located in Ghana’s Volta Region.

The set, designed to reflect the fictional divided communities of Aloe and Vera, was a massive undertaking that required meticulous planning and execution. Sedufia emphasized the importance of creating an authentic and immersive environment to bring the story to life.

Aloe Vera premiered in Ghana on March 6, 2020, to a sold-out audience at Silverbird Cinemas in Accra. The overwhelming response led to extended screening times, and the film quickly became a box office success. However, its theatrical run was disrupted just a week after its release due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite this setback, Aloe Vera found a new lease on life when it was acquired by global streaming platforms Netflix and Rok in America. The film garnered significant viewership and revenue, not only recouping its initial investment but also generating a profit.

Sedufia expressed pride in the film’s success, noting that it has solidified its place as both a commercial and critical triumph. “The journey was challenging, but the results have been incredibly rewarding. Aloe Vera has opened doors for African cinema on the global stage,” he said.

The film’s success has further cemented Sedufia’s reputation as one of Ghana’s most visionary filmmakers, with audiences eagerly anticipating his next project.
