President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that an estimated $1.7 billion is needed to complete the unfinished Agenda 111 hospital projects initiated by the previous administration.
Speaking during a meeting with the Christian Council, Mahama expressed concern over the stalled projects, revealing that close to 90 of the hospitals remain incomplete, with even commissioned facilities lacking basic equipment like beds.
“The previous government started Agenda 111 but has not been able to finish the hospitals. There are so many of them unfinished. Even the ones they commissioned don’t have a single bed,” Mahama stated. “Now we need $1.7 billion to complete the Agenda 111 projects,” he added, highlighting the financial challenge ahead.
The Agenda 111 initiative, launched to address Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure gaps, aimed to construct 111 hospitals across the country. However, the project has faced significant delays and funding shortfalls, leaving many facilities in various stages of incompletion.
In his address, Mahama proposed a collaborative approach to expedite the completion of the projects. He suggested that religious bodies, particularly those with existing healthcare facilities, could partner with the government to finish and manage some hospitals.
“If the missions have a hospital in an area, we are not coming to compete with the missions by building a hospital. We will use the resources to improve the mission hospitals so that they can provide the service,” Mahama explained. “So I am also proposing that if some of the missions are interested, they could finish some of the hospitals and manage them,” he added.
The President assured his commitment to completing the project to improve the healthcare of Ghanaians.
