Kofi Amankwaa, a Ghanaian attorney located in the Bronx, New York City, has received a 70-month prison sentence and must repay more than $29 million he deceitfully acquired from victims.
Kofi Amankwaa faced allegations of submitting fake applications for numerous clients that not only misrepresented their immigration status but were intended to deceive the system. He billed each client thousands of dollars for his services, fully aware that his deceitful actions significantly reduced their chances of obtaining their visas.
Following multiple complaints, officials in the Southern District Attorney’s Office of New York began probing into Amankwaa. He was detained and admitted guilt in September of the previous year. Amankwaa received his sentence earlier this week.
In addition to his 70-month prison sentence, the 70-year-old Ghanaian has consented to forfeit $13,389,000 from his illicit profits and to pay $16,503,425 in restitution to those he harmed.
Officials report that the Ghanaian executed his fraud by having them complete a bogus form, I-360, which serves as a specific type of visa for survivors of domestic violence.
