U.S. President Donald Trump is once again at the center of controversy after sharing an AI-generated image of himself dressed in papal robes, just days after the death of Pope Francis.
The image, which Trump posted on his social media platform, triggered immediate backlash. While some of his supporters perceived it as humorous or satirical, many others condemned it as deeply disrespectful especially in light of the recent passing of the head of the Catholic Church.
Pope Francis died last month at the age of 88 due to a stroke and heart failure, according to Vatican sources. His death was mourned globally, with Trump among several world leaders who attended the solemn funeral proceedings.
The president’s post showing him in full papal regalia was viewed by many as inappropriate and offensive. Critics flooded social media platforms with reactions:
“This is disrespectful to the Church and God himself… he’s literally the antichrist,” one user wrote
“This is disgusting and entirely offensive,” echoed another. Others labeled the act “narcissistic” and “insensitive,” particularly to Catholics worldwide. The backlash follows Trump’s recent tongue-in-cheek comments during a media interview where he was asked about Pope Francis’ successor. “I’d like to be pope. That would be my number one choice,” Trump said, adding that he admired a cardinal from New York but had no strong preference.
South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham responded jokingly on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “I was excited to hear that President Trump is open to the idea of being the next Pope… Watching for white smoke… Trump MMXXVIII!”
