Starting May 3, 2025, users of both electricity and water will face higher tariffs to guarantee a consistent provision of service.
This comes after the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) approved a new tariff that will raise electricity prices by 14.75 per cent and water prices by 4.02 per cent for all customers.
The fee that was approved at 6 p.m. last Friday, April 11, 2025, was prompted by variations in the exchange rate, the domestic inflation rate, the price of natural gas, and the electricity generation mix, among other factors.
A declaration signed by the new Executive Secretary of PURC, Dr. Shafic Suleman, clarified that a complete payment of overdue revenues from prior quarters led to a significantly greater rise in electricity and water tariffs.
Nevertheless, he stated that the commission, considering the present financial circumstances of the citizens, opted to recover only half of the unpaid debts.
Dr. Suleman stated that the commission needed to lessen the effect of tariff hikes on people’s livelihoods while making sure that the utilities were adequately funded to maintain the electricity supply.
The PURC has finished the regulatory procedure for the quarterly modification of water and electricity rates for the first and second quarters of 2025.
