Nine Zimbabwean women, including four teenagers, have been arrested in Harare for allegedly offering sexual services disguised as massage sessions, a violation of Zimbabwe’s Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
The women are accused of running operations in various massage parlours where “happy endings”, a euphemism for sexual acts were reportedly offered for an extra charge of US$20. Authorities say the practice has become increasingly prevalent as a way to lure clients.
The arrests followed a sting operation by undercover police officers posing as clients responding to online adverts promoting both massage and sexual services.
All nine women, whose identities were concealed as they appeared in court, were escorted barefoot and placed in police custody. They are facing charges under Section 81(b)(2) of the Criminal Law Act, which prohibits soliciting for prostitution.
Appearing before Harare magistrate Tapiwa Banda, the women were not asked to enter pleas. The case has been adjourned to Tuesday, May 6, for bail consideration.
Authorities continue to investigate the extent of the illegal operations, as concerns rise about the growing use of social media to advertise sexual services under the guise of wellness businesses.
