MAHAMA DIRECTS ALL APPOINTEES TO DONATE ONE-MONTH SALARY TO MAHAMACARES MEDICAL FUND

President John Dramani Mahama has instructed all political appointees in his administration to contribute one month’s salary to the newly created Mahama Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares), which is designed to assist Ghanaians in need of medical care.

The declaration was issued during the unveiling of the Code of Conduct for Political Appointees, which took place at the Jubilee House on Monday, May 5, 2025.

Addressing the gathering, President Mahama characterised the initiative as a humble yet essential measure to showcase leadership and public responsibility.

“All appointees are to donate one month’s salary to the MahamaCaresTrust Fund,” he said. “This is a modest contribution to support the medical needs of our people, especially the vulnerable.”

The directive applies to all ministers, deputy ministers, presidential officials, chief executives of state agencies, board members, Council of State members, and others holding political roles within the executive branch of government.

President Mahama mentioned that the fund would assist with medical interventions for individuals who cannot afford essential healthcare, noting that information on its management and distribution will be released in due time.

He guaranteed that all deductions would be processed via official channels and would be accurately recorded.

“This is not charity,” he noted. “It is a gesture of solidarity and a reminder that we are here to serve, not enrich ourselves.”

This salary deduction is distinct from extra penalties applied to appointees who did not declare their assets by the March 31, 2025, deadline.

Individuals who failed to meet the deadline must forfeit an additional three months’ salary to the Trust Fund, resulting in a total deduction of four months.

Mr. Mahama stated that these measures are part of a wider initiative to regain public confidence in leadership and foster a culture of integrity in public service

“We must restore the dignity of public office,” he told the gathering. “Leadership is about sacrifice, and this is just one step in that direction.”
