AFENYO-MARKIN PETITIONS IGP OVER ALLEGED POLICE ASSAULT DURING PROTEST

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has formally requested the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to investigate an alleged assault by a police officer during Tuesday’s “Save the Judiciary” demonstration.

In his petition, the Effutu MP identified the officer as Constable Forson described as “a tall, fair, and heavily built officer” stationed at Parliament’s entrance during the protest. Afenyo-Markin claims the officer physically assaulted him at the parliamentary gates, an incident he says demands urgent disciplinary action.

“The said Constable Forson assaulted me at the entrance of Parliament House during the demonstration,” the petition stated.

The Minority Leader has supplemented his complaint with a detailed public statement to counter what he calls “misleading narratives” about the incident. Attached to the petition, this account is expected to guide the police administration’s investigation.

“This petition seeks to ensure transparency and accountability in addressing this serious matter,” Afenyo-Markin wrote, emphasizing the need for proper scrutiny of the alleged misconduct during the high-profile protest.

The demonstration, organized by the Minority caucus, drew parliamentary leaders and senior officials to protest recent judicial developments. The alleged assault has raised questions about police conduct during political protests.

Concluding his petition, the opposition leader expressed confidence in the police administration: “Counting on your usual cooperation,” he wrote, signaling expectations for swift and impartial action.
