Nigerian singer and global music sensation Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, has called on the world to experience the real Africa beginning with a trip to Ghana and Nigeria before forming opinions about the continent.
Speaking in a captivating interview with Fashion Bomb Daily at the 2025 Met Gala on May 5, Tems passionately addressed global stereotypes about Africa and the often limited portrayal of African music on the international stage.
“We’re not just Afrobeats. There’s Amapiano, Afrosoul, R&B, Afro Jazz… there’s so much more happening on the continent that people are not tapped into yet,” she said.
Tems, whose soulful vocals and global influence have made her one of Africa’s brightest stars, believes Africa’s creative scene—especially in Ghana and Nigeria deserves more appreciation.
Beyond music, Tems urged people, especially those abroad, to travel and immerse themselves in the culture.
“I always encourage people to go to Lagos, Ghana… take a vacation, no agenda. Just go, see it for yourself, feel it for yourself,” she added.
Highlighting the unique energy and traditions of both nations, Tems explained that Africa’s cultural magic cannot be captured in headlines or Instagram clips.
“It’s the creativity, it’s the daily effort, the looks, the songs, the traditions, the culture it’s all of that,” she concluded.
