The Cape Coast High Court has decided in favor of Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, concerning a defamation lawsuit he filed against Stephen Cobbah, referred to as Adepa, and Yaw Korankye, known as Ampong.
Rev. Fordjour filed a lawsuit against the two defendants for defamatory remarks posted on the “Assinman Politics Gh” WhatsApp group in March 2024.
In his suit, he requested a declaration that the statements were slanderous, GHS 1 million in damages, a permanent injunction, a retraction and apology from the defendants, along with costs.
Issuing a ruling on Monday, April 28, 2025, the court found that the statements made by the defendants were clearly defamatory. It granted damages of GHS 700,000 against the defendants jointly and severally and imposed a cost of GHS 20,000 on every defendant.
The court additionally granted a permanent injunction preventing the defendants from making any more defamatory remarks about Rev. Fordjour.
It also instructed the defendants to withdraw their defamatory remarks with the same prominence as they were published and to issue a full written apology to Rev. Fordjour.
The apologies will be shared on “Assinman Politics Gh.” WhatsApp platform and any additional platforms where the slanderous remarks had been disseminated.
The ruling provides a resolution to a case that highlights the growing examination and legal repercussions related to the use of social media sites for political discourse.
