GALAMSEY DOESN’T REQUIRE AN ARMY TO SOLVE, IT IS A MORAL PROBLEM – Osafo-Maafo

Senior advisor to the president, Yaw Osafo-Maafo, asserts that the threat posed by unlawful small-scale mining (galamsey) is a moral issue that the church must assist in resolving.

According to him, the church should step in to appeal to the conscience of people who are engaging in this threat to the harm of larger society rather than the security authorities.

“It (galamsey) is a crusade we should take…the president said once that he was putting his presidency on the rope. What is happening? It is not something that you need an army to solve. It is a moral problem,” he stated in an address to Presbyterian faithful at a durbar.

“It is a moral problem and therefore Christianity comes in, you want to make money for the rest of the nation to perish? No, not at all. What morals are we teaching.

“Therefore, I think we need to do a lot more than we are doing as Christians to the whole society in which we exist,” he added.

The durbar of August 19 formed part of the 23rd General Assembly of the church which was held in the Eastern Region. Osafo-Maafo represented Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

Galamsey has become a significant problem in recent years due to its growing detrimental effects on the nation’s forests and water resources.

In a report that was leaked, a former environment minister said that members of parliament, the president, and other opposition leaders were complicit in the galamsey trade, underscoring the reasons why the struggle has been mainly viewed as a failure.
