HOW DADDY LUMBA HELPED ME TO LAND RADIO GOLD JOB- KOD Narrates

In an interview with Caleb Nii Boye on Showbiz 927, renowned broadcaster Kofi Okyere Darko discussed how famed Ghanaian Highlife artist Daddy Lumba helped him establish his illustrious radio career.

The popular radio host, known fondly as KOD, claimed that Lumba was the one who notified him of the opening at Radio Gold and even drove him there to hand in his letter of application to the staff.

“I think one of the things that propelled me to do what I did back then was the fact that I was driven into Radio Gold for the very first time by Daddy Lumba. He was like, ‘Nana, you can do this. I know you can do this. Radio Gold is looking for presenters. Let’s go.’ So he literally drove me to Radio Gold. We sent my application form,” he recounted.

KOD states that one week after submitting his application, he received a call to report for duty. He went on to remark that his speedy response was likely brought on by his prior experience working in the media industry.

“I had prior experience working because I was part of the team that built Sunshine Radio( later Choice FM, later Kasapa FM). And so they realized I had a certain experience in the media space. And also have been a copywriter for KKD, who had an advertising company called KDS.”

KOD reflected about his earliest days of radio employment. Being placed on the radio as a 19-year-old youngster was a fantastic experience.  He also spoke about the monopoly Radio Gold enjoyed by playing mostly Ghanaian music.

“We listened to Radio Gold old a lot because they played more Ghanaian content compared to the other radio stations. If you wanted highlife music, music from Ghana, it was Radio Gold.”
