“I DIDN’T MEAN IT THAT WAY”- Rex Omar Clarifies His Statement Of Canceling Afua Asantewaa’s Sing-A-Thon

The chairman of the Chairman of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), the legendary Rex Omar came under fire after ghpage.com reported about his organisation’s intention to stop the soon to be held Sing-A-Thon by Afua Asantewaa Aduonum media after he spoke on GTV morning show on Friday, December 15, 2023.

Rex Omar revealed details about Asantewaa Aduonum’s impending singathon as she looks to beat the Guinness World Record in an Instagram chat with Kafui Dey.

The seasoned High-Life performer and politician stated that, should Asantewaa fail to give GHAMRO a list of the more than three thousand Ghanaian songs she plans to perform, GHAMRO retains the authority to end her singathon on December 24, 2023.

Many Ghanaians were incensed by the multiple award-winning singer’s remarks, and they took to social media to express their outrage. They believed the elderly man and his friends were merely attempting to capitalize on the young woman’s blessings and diminish her, while she was merely doing her bit to promote Ghanaian music to a worldwide audience.

Rex Omar, however, has reached out to explain his stand in a Facebook post dated Saturday, December 16, 2023. He noted that his initial statement was not meant to disparage or criticize Afua Asantewaa’s idea and acknowledged that he was one of the first to support and encourage her on his platform.

The GHAMRO Chairman continued by emphasizing how important it is for performers like Afua Asantewaa to act now in order to prevent issues after their successes.

Additionally, he contended that the request for the entire song list was made in order to help GHAMRO manage the royalties collecting process more effectively on behalf of the compositions’ legitimate owners.

Rex further underlined that more broadcast, streaming, and other uses of the featured songs would probably result from Afua’s performances being publicized worldwide. Since GHAMRO is Ghana’s only Collective Management Organization (CMO) for music, it falls on them to search down and distribute earnings to the proper proprietors.
