“NO PRESIDENT CAN IMPOSE CANDIDATE IN NPP ELECTIONS” – Akufo Addo

On August 2, 2023, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo highlighted that no President may impose a candidate on the party against its desires during a meeting with New Patriotic Party (NPP) communicators at Jubilee House.

He argued that the NPP has always honoured its democratic processes and does not adhere to a cult of personality.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted the need to draw lessons from the past in order to prevent a repetition of the party’s defeat in 2008 in response to a request from the NPP Director of Communications over the party’s conduct in the approaching election.

He emphasized the difficulties that Ghana’s economic development experienced during the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) eight-year administration, such as dumsor (power shortages), poor economic management, and corruption.

In response to disputes inside the party, the president emphasized the value of cooperation and the rejection of ethnic or religious-based political activism. Instead of engaging in polarizing politics against party members, he urged party members to concentrate their efforts on defeating their political rivals.

President Akufo-Addo vehemently refuted claims that his administration was pressuring party members to back the Vice President by intimidating or coercing them.

He gave the communicators the assurance that no party member had been urged to support a particular candidate and that his government would stay impartial in the internal disputes.

President Akufo-Addo concluded by restating the NPP’s commitment to democratic ideals and urging all party members to sustain the spirit of togetherness by putting Ghana and its people first.
