ONLY ABOUT 5% OF MUSICIANS IN GHANA MAKE MONEY FROM MUSIC – Rex Omar Reveals

Rex Omar, a renowned Ghanaian highlife musician has revealed that very few musicians in the country make a living from music.

The music icon established that only 5% of those who pursue music in Ghana are earning money or can be considered to be gainfully employed based on study he conducted some time ago.

“Most of them are doing it with passion hoping that something will happen. Until today, most of the people pursuing music are not approaching it as business and as soon as you start to approach it as business, then you start to ask questions like if it is viable, especially doing music full time in Ghana.” He said this in an interview with Kokonsa Kester on Y107.9FM’s Weekend Rush.

He stressed that because most musicians don’t inquire, they are unaware of the necessary resources to invest in their talent as well as whether or not playing music is a sustainable career.

According to Rex Omar, most musicians lack this knowledge, which prevents them from making short-, middle-, and long-term projections.

“If your break-even point is 5 years, you need to know how much to invest in it to be able to break even. And if the answers and numbers are not tallying then it is not viable,” he mentioned.

He stressed the fact that many musicians who have achieved success in the field may simply have their fame, which sometimes has little bearing on their economic state.

He thinks this is the case because those who don’t understand this and are careless will merely continue to follow their passion, become well-known, pass away, and leave nothing to be attributed to the music they created.

“Unfortunately, this very society will start to lambast you that you didn’t live a profitable and fulfilling life. They will say you spent all you had on women. When the whole situation is that Ghana is a small market and we have very few independent record labels that have the requisite capital and knowledge to even break artistes,” he said.

He continued that the young people who are passionate about music, do not want to follow such bits of advice, despite the fact that it is a terrible circumstance.

“If you’re not careful, some people who are already in the music industry thinking and hoping they will make it will also pounce on you because of the passion they have but, if you put emotions aside and look at it with the business approach, you’ll realize that very few musicians are making money off music,” he highlighted.
