POLICE ARREST DRIVER OF TRUCK THAT CAUSED GHANA’S NEW TRAIN TO CRASH DURING TEST RUN

The driver of a Hyundai truck with the license plate GS 9018-20 has been detained by the Ghana Police Service in connection with an incident on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line that resulted in a collision with the nation’s freshly acquired Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) train.

According to the police’s first investigation, the driver reportedly left the truck on the railroad tracks, which caused it to collide with the DMU train, which was testing the vehicle after being purchased from Poland.

“The Ghana Police Service has arrested the driver of a Hyundai truck with registration number GS 9018 – 20 for allegedly causing an accident involving a Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) train on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line today Thursday 18th April 2024.

“Police preliminary investigation has established that the suspect driver left the said vehicle unattended on the railway line, leading to a collision with the train,” a police statement issued in the evening of Thursday said.

The police have reaffirmed their resolve to look into the matter further, even if they haven’t yet revealed who the culprit is.

The Ministry of Railways Development confirmed that the crash happened at approximately 12:10 p.m. The train hit the unguarded truck that was stopped in its path on a bend before failing to stop, even though the emergency braking system was engaged.

The accident did not result in any fatalities. However, according to the ministry’s statement, the accident destroyed the truck and damaged the driver’s cabin of the train.
