SAME-SEX ADULTS FACE STIFFER SENTENCE THAN OLDER MEN WHO MARRY YOUNG GIRLS – Gabby Otchere Darko

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a New Patriotic Party guru, has called attention to the disparity in treatment between grownups marrying young girls and those getting married to people of the same sex.

His comments come in the wake of the contentious marriage of 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo to a 13-year-old girl.

The tragedy has sparked discussions about the need for stronger laws to prevent underage marriage in the nation.

The Ga priest Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII came under heavy fire when a video of his marriage to Naa Okromo went viral. The ceremony took place at Nungua on Saturday, March 30, 2024, and attracted a lot of attention.

Gabby Otchere-Darko questioned why gays receive less terms than older adults who marry kids, despite the latter group’s outspoken opposition to jail sentences under anti-gay laws.

A bill imposing a three-to five-year prison term for anyone who knowingly promote or sponsor LGBTQ activities was passed by Parliament on Thursday, February 8. If caught in the act, offenders face a minimum of six months and a maximum of three years in jail.

On Tuesday, April 2, 2024, Mr. Otchere-Darko blasted Ghana for trying to impose fines on consenting homosexual partnerships while ignoring child marriage in a post on X (previously Twitter).

“In Ghana, you face a maximum jail term of 12 months if you force a minor into marriage, according to Children’s Act 1998 (Act 560). Once assented, the law that seeks to presumably protect our family values (which ignores child marriage by the way) will impose a prison sentence of up to five years for the “willful promotion, sponsorship or support of LGBTQ+ activities”. In fact two consenting adults of same sex face a stiffer sentence if they are found kissing in public than the 70-year old man who marries a 14-year old girl,” he posted.
