A recent study has shown that using cannabis increases the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes by three times.
French scientists monitored over 1,300 patients in ICU and discovered that individuals who used marijuana by itself were nearly twice as likely to experience a cardiovascular incident.
Experts today recommended that hospitals screen all patients in the emergency room for recreational drug use.
Scientists have previously proposed that THC, the active component in marijuana, stimulates the body’s fight-or-flight reaction, leading to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure.
Over the course of time, this can cause harm to the heart and raise the likelihood of serious issues such as heart attacks.
During the research, scientists monitored 1,392 individuals hospitalized in 39 various intensive care units across France for a duration of two weeks in April 2021.
Out of them, 11 percent (157 people) were found to have used recreational drugs, with 136 testing positive for cannabis.
The remaining 21 individuals tested positive for heroin, cocaine, amphetamines, or MDMA during the screening.
Over a quarter (28.7 percent) of individuals tested had positive results for two or more of these substances.
During a one-year follow-up, researchers found that 7% (94) of patients suffered a severe cardiovascular event, such as death.
Out of the 713 patients hospitalized for acute coronary syndrome, 96 (14 percent) tested positive for recreational drugs and 50 (7 percent) had severe cardiovascular incidents.
