WHY THE DEBATE? – Cwesi Oteng Questions Critics Over Nathaniel Bassey’s ‘Sing In English’ Comments

Ghanaian gospel musician, Cwesi Oteng is challenging the criticism and discussions on social media around Nigerian gospel artist Nathaniel Bassey’s request that his Ghanaian peers write more of their songs in English.

Remember that on December 2, at the Jesus Christ Encounter event held at the Accra Sports Stadium. In order for Ghanaian gospel artists to gain a wider audience worldwide, Nathaniel Bassey recommended that they sing in English.

In the future, he also anticipated that gospel performers from Ghana will perform in Nigeria and other nations.

However, his remarks spurred discussions about how language is used in music and how it affects the commercial viability of Ghanaian songs.

Cwesi Oteng shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account that he agreed with Nathaniel Bassey’s counsel for Ghanaian gospel musicians.

He implied that Nathaniel Bassey was sharing his trade secret with Ghanaian gospel artists, having already realized the advantages of singing in English and performing for a worldwide audience.

He implied that people should pay attention to him and take his lead when he questioned why some individuals were disagreeing with Nathaniel Bassey’s counsel.

“Nathaniel Bassey admonished Ghanaians to write more songs in English, and that has become an argument in Ghana. The person has tasted the goodness of the Lord in global dominance on the matter and tells us the secret, why argue?” he quizzed.
