PRESIDENT AKUFO ADDO SACKS NATIONAL SPORTS AUTHORITY BOSS AFTER CAF’S WITHDRAWAL OF BABA YARA SPORTS STADIUM LICENSE

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has fired the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Dodzie Numekevor, with immediate effect, according to JoySports.

According to reports, the decision comes after CAF revoked the license of Baba Yara Sports Stadium for hosting international matches.

JoySports reported on Monday that President Akufo-Addo instructed the dismissal of those who rented out Baba Yara Stadium for a church event six days before the AFCON 2025 qualifier with Angola.

It is also said that the President warned the Sports Minister that he would be accountable if Ghana hosts any home games outside the country.

The Sports Minister’s Chief Director, William Kartay Caesar, questioned Mr Numekevor on behalf of the Minister, asking him to justify why he should not face consequences for overseeing a body that brought shame to the president’s office and the nation as a whole.

According to sources from JoySports, President Akufo-Addo was unsatisfied with the sports infrastructure under NSA’s leadership, so he relieved Mr Numekevor of his duty on Tuesday, despite having until Wednesday, September 18, 2024, to respond to the query.

Before he was fired, he had shut down Baba Yara, Accra, and Cape Coast stadiums for repairs. The facilities’ poor quality prompted increasing worries.

The CAF advised rebuilding the Baba Yara stadium and highlighted the bad condition of the Accra and Cape Coast sports arenas in a communication to the Ghana Football Association on September 10th.

The Ghana Football Association was instructed to select a sanctioned location outside of Ghana to host the Sudan match in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers on matchday 3.

Ghana is contemplating the possibility of turning to Togo in case it fails to secure a host for Sudan at any of its facilities.

Dr. Dodzie Numekevor has been acting as the temporary head of the NSA since February 26, 2024.
