GHANAIAN COMPANY TO BUILD FIRST ELECTRIC VEHICLE ASSEMBLYING PLANT NEXT YEAR – Vice President, Bawumia Reveals

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, vice president, has revealed that a Ghanaian company plans to construct an assembly factory for electric vehicles there.

He didn’t say what the company was called, but he did say that it would start operating in 2024.

On Saturday, June 11, 2023, Dr. Bawumia stated that the electric vehicle assembly factory will increase the number of car manufacturing businesses producing in Ghana. He was speaking at the NPP International Women’s Conference.

Now, Volkswagen, Kantanka, Toyota, Peugeot, Nissan, KIA, Hyundai, and Sinotruk are manufacturing vehicles locally.

“We had no domestic automotive sector for vehicle assembly or manufacturing but what did we do about that, the new automotive sector development policy has resulted in VW, Sino Truck, Kantanka, Toyota, Peugeot, Nissan, KIA, Hyundai, they are all producing in Ghana today,” Bawumia said.

“Interesting piece of news is that a Ghanaian company is also in the pipeline to build an assembling plant for electric vehicles next year. That will be the first in West Africa,” he stated.

Recall that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced that the government would soon implement an asset-based vehicle financing program to boost demand for locally produced automobiles.

Ghanaians will be able to acquire vehicles under the financing plan as part of the Ghana Automotive Development program.

He pledged that the government would offer all support necessary to help the country meet the Association of African Automobile Manufacturers’ projection that 1.5 million vehicles will be built annually by the end of 2023.
