This has been made possible through the collaboration between Kumawood film producers, MTEC-Communications, mobile apps developers and MTN.
At the launch of the APP in Kumasi on Wednesday, the General Manger in charge of Consumer Marketing at MTN, Mr Noel Kojo-Garson, said the partnership formed part of the vision of the company to launch the movie industry into the digital world.
He said Kumawood was fast growing within the movie industry of Ghana and the collaboration was to put the industry in the limelight.
Aside that, he said it would cut down on the cost of marketing and also enable others outside the country to easily access the movies as and when they are released.
He said the ultimate beneficiary would be the consumer who would have the opportunity to preview movies before downloading them and buy packages to watch movies depending on their finances.
“Consumers would have the opportunity to buy daily, weekly, monthly and annual packs to watch movies. It is relatively cheaper on the side of the customer and also remember that if we don’t make it cheap for the customer to be able to view, it is a volume gained. The more people you get on the platform, the better it is for the players within this App,” he stated.
Kumawood
The CEO of Kumawood Multimedia, Sam Darko, welcomed the collaboration which he said would go a long way to promote the industry and also save producers from piracy.
According to him, the film producers would not have to spend money to find agents, distributors and flyers to market the movies.
He said with the APP, producers might decide not to even print CDs but upload the movies onto the platform for people to watch.
This, he explained would totally stop the piracy as the movies cannot be copied from the platform and also help the producers to recoup their investments.
He said already, more than 200 film producers were on board and have agreed to upload their films onto the platform.
App Developer
The CEO of MTEC Communications, the developers of the APP, Mr Chimeru Mbonu, said this was the first time such an APP has been developed for a movie industry in Africa and was hopeful that it would help to market the Kumawood film industry.
He said based on the success of the Kumawood APP, it would be extended to other countries in the sub-region.
He said the application is available on Playstore on Android phones.
